Here are a couple iPhone pics from Vicksburg, MS.

Vicksburg Memorial Park, overlooking the Mississippi River.

The old 2-lane bridge over the river with the new one right behind it.

The 1st one is 2 lane and was there when we moved to MS in 72. It is very narrow. Two 18 wheelers meeting each other had very little room for error. The other one opened in 73. I thought I remembered a railroad track hanging off the side of the old one, but cannot see any signs of its existence.

Just searched some info. Says one lane for bridge service and a Kansas City Southern rail. Opened May 1, 1030. I guess the 2 lanes are better suited for one service lane for the railroad.

Any logic behind the curve in the closer bridge? Here in Ohio they celebrate what is known as an S-bridge built in the shape of an S which was built before cars to force those driving horse buggies to slow down to cross the bridge. I wondered if there was a similar idea behind this curve.

I think it has to do with separation from the railroad tracks that run right beside the other lanes when they reach the end of the bridge. I was but a young chap the last time I crossed that bridge. I remember it being a tight squeeze meeting 18 wheelers, and then the occasional train.
