where do you work? I saw something like that tower in the first picture on the interstate the other day. I wondered what it was. Are they tearing the place down? I work with equipment like the two pieces in the last picture.

I work at a chemical plant in Decatur, AL. The tower in the first pic is a refinment tower for Hexamethylenediamine or HMD for short. It is a chemical that they mass produce to sell to the nylon industries. We ship it out in barge quantites,ISO Containers, 55 gallon drums, 275 gallon totes. Heck we send out 480 drums a month to Seoul, South Korea on 40ft intermodal containers. Keeps us busy. They use HMD in tires, and the automobile industry along with other applications. List is way too long to type. Yes Doug they are tearing down sections of the plant. They had a demo contractor come in and start the job, but he filed for bankruptcy. He wasn't bankrupt. Basicly he got all the high dollar scrap, Nickel, Copper, Stainless, and Hasteloy, but didn't what to fool with scrap iron and all the other refuse. So they bid it out to another demo contractor, Mayer-Pollock Steel out of Pennsylvaina. They been working like buttholes and elbows, cleaning up what's left. Good but of scrap iron and aluminum. That trackhoe is massive. They got a couple of Hitachi trackhoes with grapple hooks and magnets and several Bobcat skidsteers for the smaller stuff. Can't wait till they start ripping down buildings. I'll have a front row seat. I'll try and get some vids and put them up when they start that.

I run a hitachi with a bucket for digging but I am sure much of the machinery they are using have grapples, shears, or the magnets you stated.

Saw this old Suburban today while out getting lunch. Badging showed it to have a small block 400 which was right for the time frame. He did a nice jub adding newer style wheels and tires. Not the set I would go with, but cool none the less.
