Israel's Hidden Nuclear Weapons Factory

Israel and United States nuclear hypocrisy is clearly evident when one realizes the full extent of Israel's hidden Dimona nuclear weapons factory as well as the fact that Iran, unlike Israel, is a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has been pushing for the removal of all weapons of mass destruction across the globe.

As the Obama administration lays the groundwork to isolate Iran economically from the rest of the world over that nation's nuclear program ~ don't forget that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has recently ordered Iran's foreign currency reserves, currently in US dollars, to be held in euros.

Press TV reports that the order was issued on September 12 following a decision by the trustees of the country's foreign reserves. An ominous reminder that shortly after Iraq announced the same move to oil payments in euros versus dollars ~ the United States attacked Iraq.

Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan recently rightfully condemned Western countries' focus on Iran's nuclear program, stressing that the world should be dealing with Israel's nuclear weapons instead. The Turkish president correctly noted that Israel has "nuclear weapons" and has illegally used "phosphorous bombs" against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

"If only Iran is put on the world agenda, then we may neglect other issues such as the Gaza [conflict] that should be addressed," Erdogen sarcastically commented .

Upon his arrival to Istanbul from New York, Erdogen said that during his recent meetings in the UN General Assembly and the G20 leaders' summit in Pittsburg, no military option against Iran has been on the agenda.

Tehran says its nuclear program is being pursued within the framework of the IAEA and international regulations. The UN nuclear watchdog in its previous reports has confirmed that Iran only enriches uranium-235 to a level of "less than 5 percent."

Please note, Uranium, which fuels a nuclear power plant, can be used for military purposes only if enriched to high levels of above 90 percent."

And this is precisely what Israel has been doing for some time ~ while hypocritically accusing Iran now for supposedly doing the same thing.

On Sunday October 5th, 1985 ~ almost 24 years ago ~ The Sunday Times Insight Team revealed that Hidden beneath the Negev desert, a factory had been producing atomic warheads for the last 20 years. Now it has almost certainly begun manufacturing thermo-nuclear weapons, with yields big enough to destroy entire cities.

Information about Israel's capacity to manufacture the bomb came from the testimony of Mordechai Vanunu, a 31-year-old Israeli who worked as a nuclear technician for nearly 10 years in Machon 2 ~ a top secret, underground bunker built to provide the vital components necessary for weapons production at Dimona, the Israeli nuclear research establishment.

Vanunu's evidence surprised nuclear weapons experts who were approached by Insight to verify its accuracy because it showed that Israel does not just have the atom bomb - which has been long suspected - but that it has become a major nuclear power. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/article830147.ece

Here is Israel's Dimona Nuclear Weapons Factory In 3D as revealed in testimony by Mordechia Vanunu. 5 minute must see video ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbjgDERSuiI&;feature

The tide may be changing ~ In a surprise victory for Arab states the UN nuclear assembly voted last Friday to urge Israel to accede to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and place all atomic sites under UN inspections. Israel promptly promised not to cooperate ~ obviously with the full backing of the United States.

Hypocrisy reigns in the Nuclear world.

interesting article? NO... The simple and obvious fact is the world has known about the nuclear arms in Irael since we gave them the first ones in the 70's. They don't use them, and like us are now only using them as a deterrent. Unlike "Little Hitler" in Iran. Israel doesn't attack anyone, they repel attacks on themselves.

Nice cover-up try but I don't buy it. Show some proof of what you spew. Of course they attack. Last Spring, Rose Gottemoeller, an assistant secretary of state and Washington's chief nuclear arms negotiator, asked Israel to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Israel refused.

The United Nations passed a resolution calling on Israel to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to submit to inspections. Israel refused.

The IAEA asked Israel to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to submit to inspections. Israel refused.

Iran's formal notification to the IAEA of the planned construction of the backup fuel-rod facility underscores that Iran is playing by the rules of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which Iran has signed.

Iran allows IAEA inspections of all its facilities.

Contrary to face-saving claims, it appears that the US and Israel were both caught off guard by Iran's announcement. The reasoning is simple. Had the US or Israel announced the existence of he new facility before Iran's notified the IAEA, it would have put Iran on the defensive. As it is now, the US and Israel seem to be playing catch up, casting doubt on the veracity of Israel's claims to "know" that Iran is a nuclear threat.

The IAEA and all 16 United States Intelligence Agencies are unanimous in agreement that Iran is not building and does not possess nuclear weapons.

In 1986, Mordachai Vanunu blew the whistle and provided photographs showing Israel's clandestine nuclear weapons factory underneath the reactor at Dimona.

Israel made the same accusations against Iraq that it is making against Iran, leading up to Israel's bombing of the power station at Osirik. Following the invasion of 2003, international experts examined the ruins of the power station at Osirik and found no evidence of a clandestine weapons factory in the rubble.

The United Nations has just released the Goldstone Report, a scathing report which accuses Israel of 37 specific war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza earlier this year. Israel has denounced the report as "Anti-Semitic (even though Judge Goldstone is himself Jewish), and the United States will block the report from being referred to the War Crimes Tribunal at the Hague, thereby making the US Government an accessory after-the-fact.

What many people don't realize is that Israel has a larger nuclear arsenal than the United States, the Russian Commonwealth of States, and China combined!

Not only do they have more nukes than anyone else, but their arsenal is about 30-40 years more recent than our own!

Next to Pakistan and India, Israel is the next largest threat of Global Thermonuclear War...but only because Pakistan and India have been looking for any excuse to fire theirs at each other for the past couple of years.

For too long the International Community has allowed Israel to proliferate itself with nuclear weapons without adhering to International Treaty. For the sake of everyone on this planet, we need to stop giving them preferential treatment that we don't let anyone else have, and make them abide by the same rules that everyone else plays by.

In the very least, it would be a travesty if we continued to allow them to break the rules yet go after those countries that abide by the rules (just like we did with Iraq).

We often wonder why the United States has lost its credibility with the International Community, but making hypocritical decisions like this in our desire to wage war and police the planet is the precise reason why.

Leave Iran alone, and push Israel to adhere to the same International Standards that Iran and everyone else in the world with nuclear capabilities must abide. If Israel refuses, then let them sleep in the bed they made all by themselves. If you keep protecting a bully from the ones they bully, you will become no better than the bully themselves. It's simple Grade School Social Skills that apparently our Government Leaders failed to learn when they were left behind as children.

My point is everybody needs to know what we are being tricked to believe before we go to yet another fake war. You have been tricked for a loooooooooooooong time which is evident in every post you make. "Keep" following blind orders of enforcement is all you seem to know.

At least Iran has publicly declared it has a new uranium enrichment facility. And it will allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect it. Israel, though, has yet to make such announcements or gesture.

For decades Israel has refused to confirm the now well-documented fact that it has a significant arsenal of nuclear warheads — the only country in the Middle East known to have successfully developed such a program. Estimates suggest it has as many as 200 warheads, putting every Arab state within range of a nuclear strike.

ElBaradei says nuclear Israel number one threat to Mideast: report

TEHRAN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei said Sunday that "Israel is number one threat to Middle East" with its nuclear arms, the official IRNA news agency reported.

At a joint press conference with Iran's Atomic Energy Organization chief Ali Akbar Salehi in Tehran, ElBaradei brought Israel under spotlight and said that the Tel Aviv regime has refused to allow inspections into its nuclear installations for 30years, the report said.

"Israel is the number one threat to the Middle East given the nuclear arms it possesses," ElBaradei was quoted as saying.

Israel is widely assumed to have nuclear capabilities, although it refuses to confirm or deny the allegation.

"This (possession of nuclear arms) was the cause for some proper measures to gain access to its (Israel's) power plants ... and the U.S. president has done some positive measures for the inspections to happen," said ElBaradei.

ElBaradei arrived in Iran Saturday for talks with Iranian officials over Tehran's nuclear program.

Leaders of the United States, France and Britain have condemned Iran's alleged deception to the international community involving covert activities in its new underground nuclear site.

Last month, Iran confirmed that it is building a new nuclear fuel enrichment plant near its northwestern city of Qom. In reaction, the IAEA asked Tehran to provide detailed information and access to the new nuclear facility as soon as possible.

On Sunday, ElBaradei said the UN nuclear watchdog would inspect Iran's new uranium plant near Qom on Oct. 25.

http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1246443706536

Israel privately heaved a sigh of relief Thursday at the election of Japan's Yukiya Amano to replace Mohamed ElBaradei as head of the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA).

The relief comes both because the tenure of ElBaradei, with whom Israel has had a rocky relationship, is about to end, and because Amano beat out South Africa's candidate, Abdul Samad Minty.

While officially Israel had no comment on the development, privately, government sources said Amano was Israel's preferred candidate.

"We hope now that our relationship with the IAEA will be less tense, that the unnecessary friction with the IAEA will disappear, and that we can return to full cooperation," one government source said.

He also said the expectation in Jerusalem was that Amano would be more "neutral" than ElBaradei was when it came to Israel's concerns.

Amano won 23 of the votes at IAEA headquarters in Vienna. One delegate abstained from the vote and the remaining eleven voted for Minty.

Amano, 62, appealed for "solidarity of all member states," and touched on the devastation US atom bombs wreaked on his country in pledging to do his utmost to prevent the spread of nuclear arms. His allusions to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki pointed to a deep commitment to non-proliferation.

While Amano and Minty were believed to have equivalent technical expertise for the job, South Africa's relationship with Iran is very problematic from an Israeli perspective. For instance, in 2006, when the IAEA finally decided to report Iran to the UN Security Council, South Africa was one of five countries, alongside Libya, Algeria, Indonesia and Belarus, that abstained. Only Cuba, Syria and against.

At the time, South Africa was considered among the most reticent of non-Arab or Muslim countries to join in international condemnations of Iran.

The reasons given for the degree of coziness between Iran and South Africa include historical and business relationships.

Iran was a big backer of the African National Congress during its fight against apartheid, and Iran provides South Africa with cheap oil.

When asked by others who Israel supported, the government source said Jerusalem had not hid the fact it preferred Amano.

Nuclear Weapons

Israel has not confirmed that it has nuclear weapons and officially maintains that it will not be the first country to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East. Yet the existence of Israeli nuclear weapons is a "public secret" by now due to the declassification of large numbers of formerly highly classified US government documents which show that the United States by 1975 was convinced that Israel had nuclear weapons.

History:

Israel began actively investigating the nuclear option from its earliest days. In 1949, HEMED GIMMEL a special unit of the IDF's Science Corps, began a two-year geological survey of the Negev desert with an eye toward the discovery of uranium reserves. Although no significant sources of uranium were found, recoverable amounts were located in phosphate deposits.

The program took another step forward with the creation of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC) in 1952. Its chairman, Ernst David Bergmann, had long advocated an Israeli bomb as the best way to ensure "that we shall never again be led as lambs to the slaughter." Bergmann was also head of the Ministry of Defense's Research and Infrastructure Division (known by its Hebrew acronym, EMET), which had taken over the HEMED research centers (HEMED GIMMEL among them, now renamed Machon 4) as part of a reorganization. Under Bergmann, the line between the IAEC and EMET blurred to the point that Machon 4 functioned essentially as the chief laboratory for the IAEC. By 1953, Machon 4 had not only perfected a process for extracting the uranium found in the Negev, but had also developed a new method of producing heavy water, providing Israel with an indigenous capability to produce some of the most important nuclear materials.

For reactor design and construction, Israel sought the assistance of France. Nuclear cooperation between the two nations dates back as far as early 1950's, when construction began on France's 40MWt heavy water reactor and a chemical reprocessing plant at Marcoule. France was a natural partner for Israel and both governments saw an independent nuclear option as a means by which they could maintain a degree of autonomy in the bipolar environment of the cold war.

In the fall of 1956, France agreed to provide Israel with an 18 MWt research reactor. However, the onset of the Suez Crisis a few weeks later changed the situation dramatically. Following Egypt's closure of the Suez Canal in July, France and Britain had agreed with Israel that the latter should provoke a war with Egypt to provide the European nations with the pretext to send in their troops as peacekeepers to occupy and reopen the canal zone. In the wake of the Suez Crisis, the Soviet Union made a thinly veiled threat against the three nations. This episode not only enhanced the Israeli view that an independent nuclear capability was needed to prevent reliance on potentially unreliable allies, but also led to a sense of debt among French leaders that they had failed to fulfill commitments made to a partner. French premier Guy Mollet is even quoted as saying privately that France "owed" the bomb to Israel.

On 3 October 1957, France and Israel signed a revised agreement calling for France to build a 24 MWt reactor (although the cooling systems and waste facilities were designed to handle three times that power) and, in protocols that were not committed to paper, a chemical reprocessing plant. This complex was constructed in secret, and outside the IAEA inspection regime, by French and Israeli technicians at Dimona, in the Negev desert under the leadership of Col. Manes Pratt of the IDF Ordinance Corps.

Both the scale of the project and the secrecy involved made the construction of Dimona a massive undertaking. A new intelligence agency, the Office of Science Liasons,(LEKEM) was created to provide security and intelligence for the project. At the height construction, some 1,500 Israelis some French workers were employed building Dimona. To maintain secrecy, French customs officials were told that the largest of the reactor components, such as the reactor tank, were part of a desalinization plant bound for Latin America. In addition, after buying heavy water from Norway on the condition that it not be transferred to a third country, the French Air Force secretly flew as much as four tons of the substance to Israel.

Trouble arose in May 1960, when France began to pressure Israel to make the project public and to submit to international inspections of the site, threatening to withhold the reactor fuel unless they did. President de Gaulle was concerned that the inevitable scandal following any revelations about French assistance with the project, especially the chemical reprocessing plant, would have negative repercussions for France's international position, already on shaky ground because of its war in Algeria.

At a subsequent meeting with Ben-Gurion, de Gaulle offered to sell Israel fighter aircraft in exchange for stopping work on the reprocessing plant, and came away from the meeting convinced that the matter was closed. It was not. Over the next few months, Israel worked out a compromise. France would supply the uranium and components already placed on order and would not insist on international inspections. In return, Israel would assure France that they had no intention of making atomic weapons, would not reprocess any plutonium, and would reveal the existence of the reactor, which would be completed without French assistance. In reality, not much changed - French contractors finished work on the reactor and reprocessing plant, uranium fuel was delivered and the reactor went critical in 1964.

DIA Estimate For Israeli Nuclear Weapons

Excerpt from 160-page secret DIA report, first disclosed and reproduced in Rowan Scarborough, Rumsfeld's War (Regnery, 2004), pp. 194-223.

The United States first became aware of Dimona's existence after U-2 overflights in 1958 captured the facility's construction, but it was not identified as a nuclear site until two years later. The complex was variously explained as a textile plant, an agricultural station, and a metallurgical research facility, until David Ben-Gurion stated in December 1960 that Dimona complex was a nuclear research center built for "peaceful purposes."

There followed two decades in which the United States, through a combination of benign neglect, erroneous analysis, and successful Israeli deception, failed to discern first the details of Israel's nuclear program. As early as 8 December 1960, the CIA issued a report outlining Dimona's implications for nuclear proliferation, and the CIA station in Tel Aviv had determined by the mid-1960s that the Israeli nuclear weapons program was an established and irreversible fact.

United States inspectors visited Dimona seven times during the 1960s, but they were unable to obtain an accurate picture of the activities carried out there, largely due to tight Israeli control over the timing and agenda of the visits. The Israelis went so far as to install false control room panels and to brick over elevators and hallways that accessed certain areas of the facility. The inspectors were able to report that there was no clear scientific research or civilian nuclear power program justifying such a large reactor - circumstantial evidence of the Israeli bomb program - but found no evidence of "weapons related activities" such as the existence of a plutonium reprocessing plant.

Although the United States government did not encourage or approve of the Israeli nuclear program, it also did nothing to stop it. Walworth Barbour, US ambassador to Israel from 1961-73, the bomb program's crucial years, primarily saw his job as being to insulate the President from facts which might compel him to act on the nuclear issue, alledgedly saying at one point that "The President did not send me there to give him problems. He does not want to be told any bad news." After the 1967 war, Barbour even put a stop to military attachés' intelligence collection efforts around Dimona. Even when Barbour did authorize forwarding information, as he did in 1966 when embassy staff learned that Israel was beginning to put nuclear warheads in missiles, the message seemed to disappear into the bureaucracy and was never acted upon.

Nuclear Weapons Production

In early 1968, the CIA issued a report concluding that Israel had successfully started production of nuclear weapons.
This estimate, however, was based on an informal conversation between Carl Duckett, head of the CIA's Office of Science and Technology, and Edward Teller, father of the hydrogen bomb. Teller said that, based on conversations with friends in the Israeli scientific and defense establishment, he had concluded that Israel was capable of building the bomb, and that the CIA should not wait for an Israeli test to make a final assessment because that test would never be carried out.

CIA estimates of the Israeli arsenal's size did not improve with time. In 1974, Duckett estimated that Israel had between ten and twenty nuclear weapons. The upper bound was derived from CIA speculation regarding the number of possible Israeli targets, and not from any specific intelligence. Because this target list was presumed to be relatively static, this remained the official American estimate until the early 1980s.

The actual size and composition of Israel's nuclear stockpile is uncertain and the subject of many - often conflicting - estimates and reports. It is widely reported that Israel had two bombs in 1967, and that Prime Minister Eshkol ordered them armed in Israel's first nuclear alert during the Six-Day War. It is also reported that, fearing defeat in the October 1973 Yom Kippur War, the Israelis assembled 13 twenty-kiloton atomic bombs.

Israel could potentially have produced a few dozen nuclear warheads in the period 1970-1980, and is thought to have produced sufficient fissile material to build 100 to 200 warheads by the mid-1990s. In 1986 descriptions and photographs of Israeli nuclear warheads were published in the London Sunday Times of a purported underground bomb factory at the Dimona nuclear reactor. The photographs were taken by Mordechai Vanunu, a dismissed Israeli nuclear technician. His information led some experts to conclude that Israel had a stockpile of 100 to 200 nuclear devices at that time.

By the late 1990s the U.S. Intelligence Community estimated that Israel possessed between 75-130 weapons, based on production estimates. The stockpile would certainly include warheads for mobile Jericho-1 and Jericho-2 missiles, as well as bombs for Israeli aircraft, and may include other tactical nuclear weapons of various types. Some published estimates even claimed that Israel might have as many as 400 nuclear weapons by the late 1990s. We believe these numbers are exaggerated, and that Israel's nuclear weapons inventory may include less than 100 nuclear weapons. Stockpiled plutonium could be used to build additional weapons if so decided.

1st off...your "All countries need to "declare and dismantle" all nuclear weapons" comment is as dumb as what "Your" man's crew is trying to do with or right to bear arms. Criminals, and terrorists dont go by the law or rules. So if every country got rid of all Nukes, those scumbag terrorists and the like will have no deterent not to use the ones they have. And yes some of those Terrorists run country's weather you want to believe it or not. I usually dont post in your threads...but I've noticed something. First it was all Hate Bush, stop global warming (Proven BS), then Hale the great one Obama, now your all about anti-govt. Pick a side and stay there....

Consider this a warning! Watch your comments towards Mngmt and members. Because I know as soon as someone makes a comment about you, mngmt's inbox gets hit with complaints from you.

1st off, if nuclear weapons are such a effective deterrent then what happened since the US dropped two atomic bombs on Japan in 1945?.....Is it showing the other countries to do nothing?.....NO IT"S NOT..hasn't helped at all....and it won't for economic reasons which is why we go to war.

You're justification for why anyone should have nuclear bombs is a good one for the supposedly "terrorists" to have one also......doesn't work for me.

I for one feel less safe with nuclear weapons in the US pre-programmed to hit major US cities since the 60's.

Interesting we now do our main business with a country that is communist, has nuclear weapons, terrorizes their citizens and others in the world and took away our jobs....and we are so stupid to consume, consume, consume from them.

2nd off, I don't have a "Your" man's crew.... so drop- that one too.

3rd, You skip over "freedom of speech" and jump to "right to bear arms"....wonder why that's more important since we have so many nuclear bombs to keep everyone inline? What would you need with a gun and have you used one for protection in the US? Doubt it.

If guns were more restricted we wouldn't have as many killings in schools and colleges every year that's on the increase. Even the post office is a "if" these days.

I do follow the rules as best as I can and ask the same from others including members, mods and administration as of lately. The thing I see is the rules "keep" changing/bending and misquotes are not addressed like above. I've also taken enough unjust accusations such as the few posters above without making a single complaint other than asking for a man-up open conversation and chance to defend/share what I discover like anyone else does. RIGHT? I did my homework without blurting false accusations and comments like I see above and I stuck with it. I'm still digging into this because I'm interested in knowing the truth.

If I have lots of topics of interest be it good or bad to others tastes,........if it's Titantalk or politics or environmental info., there's a section/forum for each and they are in place and I don't see the need for you try to force me to "Pick a side and stay there"...that's what all the forum sections are for as I understand it...different topics.. RIGHT or is this a new RULE against freedom of speech/choice here? <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/017.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt012' /> <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/004.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt004' />

I've also stated I'm a political atheist now so there isn't a side any longer to PICK.

As new information/events unfold I go with what's in my heart not the "gun" so yes I will change my views such as with the POTUS. <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/004.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt004' />

.

On global warming it's proven we can adjust the weather with HARRP and ChemTrails and have been doing so for a long time to attempt to slow/hide the effects of global warming......I'm staying with it being real from what I've researched but welcome what you may offer in that thread.

Any pilot that drops bombs on innocent men, women, boys, girls, animals, plants, buildings and schools is a "terrorist" in the eyes of the innocent ones that can say/do nothing but endure. The word "TERRORIST" is a trick on reality used to induce FEAR and allow unjust actions........I don't buy it and less and less people who can connect the dots don't either. Same as all the other topics not in this thread you picked.

The best pilot is the one that refuses orders to kill innocent lives.

Oh...the FED isn't the government....neither is the Illuminati... <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/004.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt004' /> but I am anti-them... <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/003.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt005' />

I never stated I hate BUSH....find it if you can....or fix your misquote... <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/004.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt004' /> <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/018.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt009' />

Thanks for your comments and allowing mine.....if you want to continue here or via PM that's fine with me....I'm for engaging in stimulating conversations.....not bully "gun-boat democracy" tactics as you well know.

I do ask that you treat members "fair and square" and not one-sided and do not try to enforce picking false sides/divisions with threats/warnings. We are ALL in the same boat like it or not.

I also look forward to hearing from Kev. and Todd on their accusations above as usual and as I've said in the past.....PEACE-LIGHT-LOVE ALL .....<img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/014.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt014' /> <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/003.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt008' />

Israel's Air War: Pilots Disobey Orders, Refuse to Hit Civilians.

Israeli pilots 'deliberately miss' targets

Fliers admit aborting raids on civilian targets as concern grows over the reliability of intelligence

Inigo Gilmore at Hatzor Air Base, Israel

Sunday August 6, 2006

The Observer [/b]

At least two Israeli fighter pilots have deliberately missed civilian targets in Lebanon as disquiet grows in the military about flawed intelligence, The Observer has learnt. Sources say the pilots were worried that targets had been wrongly identified as Hizbollah facilities.

Voices expressing concern over the armed forces' failures are getting louder. One Israeli cabinet minister said last week: 'We gave the army so much money. Why are we getting these results?' Last week saw Hizbollah's guerrilla force, dismissed by senior Israeli military officials as 'ragtag', inflict further casualties on one of the world's most powerful armies in southern Lebanon. At least 12 elite troops, the equivalent of Britain's SAS, have already been killed, and by yesterday afternoon Israel's military death toll had climbed to 45.

Shapiro said: 'Some pilots told me they have shot at the side of targets because they're afraid people will be there, and they don't trust any more those who give them the coordinates and targets.'

He added: 'One pilot told me he was asked to hit a house on a hill, which was supposed to be a place from where Hizbollah was launching Katyusha missiles. But he was afraid civilians were in the house, so he shot next to the house ...
