How to remove the 3rd Brake light for Sat radio install

My back was hurt at work so my son did most of the work and I told him how to proceed (he is 13 so you can do this without professional help.)

How to remove the 3rd Brake light for Satellite antenna install.

There are 2 plugs in the roof near the rear window. You need to remove the 2 plugs. You can use a Flathead screw driver. They are a little bit if a pain in the ARSE, but you just have to pry on them a bit. (pics of the plugs attached)

Once the plugs are removed you will see a long bolt with a nut on the end. It is a 8mm nut not a 7mm as I read somewhere else. (pics attached) You need a DEEP well socket in order to remove (loosen) the nuts.

I didn't want to chance not being able to get the nut back on so I loosened it until it was just about ready to come off. I then puled on the brake light which popped out about a 1/2 an inch. I then fed the wires through the gap. You really need 2 people at this point. One to feed the wire and the other to fish it through the hole.

Once the wire is through mount your Sat antenna with the tape provided in the kit. Then you have to run you wire through the cab to the place you want it installed. I ran it along the back window under the headliner. The route you take with the wire after that is up to you and is dependent on final install location of the tuner.

After the wire was ran in the headliner and such, I tightened the nuts and checked the brake light. I then replaced the plugs.

I have moved this thread to the "Nissan Titan Interior, Exterior, and Audio mods" forum as I think it fits better there. Also, if you think a how to section would be appropriate, please post it in the Site problems/suggestions thread so others can weigh in on it there. Also, I am much more likely to see suggestions for the site there.

Great thread BTW! <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/041.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt003' />

No problem. If it had been anyone else I probably wouldn't have said anything. I picked on you because of that hideous logo that you call your avatar. <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/018.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt003' />

Hey krh2, I forgot the brake light is held on by some double stick tape ( sticky gasket) or something of that sort. You might have to pull on it a little to get it to pop. Also another good tip is to get someone inside the truck to shine a flashlight through the hole where the nut is located. That way it is easier, just run the wire towards the light until the person holding the light can grab it. It's pretty basic, good luck although you won't need it.

Does the "tape / gasket" just fit snug over the antenna wire or do you have to notch the brake light?

If you look at your brake light it has a small gap (1/16th or so) between the light and the cab. The wire comes out of that gap so no notching of the brake light. The gasket is under the light itself, it isn't around the outside of the light. I ran the wire out of the passenger's side of the brake light. I have to do a check to see if it is going to leak any water. I seriously doubt that it will. The gasket looks like it will take the shape of the wire and complete the seal. I put a extra turn on the nuts in the inside. They're pretty tight. I'll let you know tomorrow if it leaks at all. I really think that it won't.

quick note for KRH2. I also installed the XM antenna through the 3rd light. I have had NO, ZERO, NADA water leak issues. The trick part was to carefully pull the ceiling down a bit to allow you to get the cable run to the side. Once you get the cable across to the side you can easily tuck it in around the trim all the way to the front and run down the A-pillar. I get such a kick out of showing people how easy this stuff is. My friends always pay to have it done, and I show them how to save 75 bucks in 15minutes. Keeping slow firends is good for the ego. Ha. I love my XM by the way, and this is the 3rd vehicle I have put it in. <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/020.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt002' />

Thanks Dawg, I actually have to buy a second antenna as the first one was installed in my boat. Love the XM especially at the Colorado river where get 1 fm station.

We were betrayed here by a huge radio company, and I got burned out on my CD's, and that was when I first got it. I have never looked back. We got our station back with another company, but I only listen to the morning show every now and then. The comedy channel is great for road trips. <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/020.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt020' />

In the dredging up an old thread dept.:

DevilDawg - you wouldn't be talking about KLOL would you??

I moved out of the area in late 1999 but, I grew up on KLOL (League City) and was shocked and dismayed when I heard they changed formats to Tejano <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/017.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt067' />

That was one station I thought would never change. Oh well you know what they say - the only thing that is constant....

Rock on!!
