170' Thermo Stat

My Titan was running a bit warmer then I'd like it to run with the OEM stat. So after looking around and trying a few different things I settled on one.

First I tried the Stant 170 made for the Titan. It was really cheap looking compared to the OEM stock thermostat. It opened earlier then the stock stat but under hard load running the truck this stat did not open and flow as well as the OEM stat. I found this the hard way pulling my trailer up a hill. I had already heard tis was a problem so I was prepared and put the stock stat back in.

Now I have a 1996 300Z thermo stat PN 21200-42L01 170'.

The diameter is a perfect fit. As you can see from the pic below there is a cage on the back of the stat...at first I left it on and did some testing. This cage did not allow the stat to open as much as it needed and I heated my truck up to 219 degrees.

So back to the drawing board. Finally I took a hack saw and cut the cage off the back of this stat. Now....my truck NEVER goes over 183 degrees even while doing back to back to back 0-60 WOT Cipher runs.

Is this something you would recommend for us non racing type? What would a guy like me gain from doing this? Worth it. All I do is tow the TT, boat, and to work and back.

To be honest I'm not sure the gain is enough to want to play when you don't go to the track. I'm just looking for that extra 5-6 hp from running slightly cooler.

My truck ran between 190 and 195 before hand and it handled my trailer pretty darn well....I pulled it from CA to South Dakota and back. So the stock stat works pretty darn good. But now I run 183 degrees and with that I'll gain HP.

Man that is a long haul. Makes me a nervous wreck just towing it an hour. How big is your TT. Mine is 25' and roughly 6500 loaded. 5-6 hp gain with just a tstat? That is a lot of hp for the $$$.

A cooler vehicle is a happy vehicle!!! From 160 degrees up the power/torque starts to drop. But for emissions it must run 176 and higher I think it is.

I am a truck driver right now.....so towing a 24' trailer don't bug me at all. Just moves around a lot more then a big rig does.

You know I'd have to look at it and see what brand it is.......the Dealer sold it too me when I bought my trailer. I'll check that out today and get back to you.

I know my brake controller is Husky.
