Steps and Tools Needed to Drain and Refill the Rear Differential Fluid (to be performed after warm-up):

1-
Lower the spare tire to the ground to access the fill plug.

2- Remove the fill and drain plugs with a 3/8" break-away bar or socket wrench. Remove fill plug first to allow air to enter gear case before draining.

3- Reinstall Drain Plug after used fluid stops draining (reseal plug with red RTV high temperature sealant).

4- Refill differential with new 75-140W synthetic differential fluid.

5- Install Fill plug ( reseal plug with red RTV high temperature sealant).

6- Inspect front and side shaft seals for signs of leakage.

Happy "Differential Fluid Changing!" <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/023.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt023' /> <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/003.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt003' />

I changed my 05 Titan's REAR differential fluid over the weekend. Of course it has the OEM Aluminium finned-cover.

The 05 manual that came with my Titan has no fluid volume listings for the rear or front differentials?

I backed the rear on some wood 6x6" blocks to get more fluid in.

It took 66 oz. or 4.125 pts. or 2.0625 qts.

68 ozs. would be 4.250 pts.

To my surprise I noticed the fluid looked very good, not too dark and not a single speck of metal was in it or on the drain plug....just a little "break-in silver" seating grease on the magnetic drain plug.

I even used a small micron mesh screen to dump it thru and couldn't find a speck of metal!!<img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/003.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt003' />

My Titan almost has 12,000 miles on it so I figured it was time to change the front and rear differential fluids.

How much fluid have you been putting in when you change the rear and front diffies.?

Does anyone do some figure eight's like suggested by PML and recheck/top up again??

I thought I could get more oil in there??....I guess If I drive then check the level quickly it won't all be settled to the bottom and I can get more in but should I???

Ohhhhhhh I put in the Amsoil SEVERE GEAR 75-140W and my Titan seems to really love it....especially at 60-80 MPH I think I'm noticing less RPM's than before??!! <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/003.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt003' /> <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/020.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt003' />

Retail is $12.55 and preferred customers pay $9.70/qt.!! <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/041.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt041' />

Amsoil gear oil containers don't have a convenient fill-spout on them so I used a Coastal Pump to do the filling.

The Coastal hand pump screws directly on the oil bottle.

Well I'll do the front differential next and with the same type fluid as I used in the rear!!! <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/003.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt003' /> <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/020.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt020' /> <img src='http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':smt023' />
